In fact, the CDC says not to eat any romaine lettuce that is not labeled as to where it was grown. That's the first time I have heard that recommendation.
Sounds serious.

piquéMy stepson in San Francisco just recovered from e-coli attack. He was very, very ill. Got it from eating bok choy.

Scary! Sorry to hear of it, pique.
I never understood how e coli could cause the super dangerous infections I read about in recent years since there's always e coli in the GI
tract. Then I understood it was a special strain of e coli that was behind the serious infections.
I wonder if those supposedly seven times washed organic lettuce packs are really as safe as they claim to be.

dolmansaxlilMy grocery store sent me an email tonight informing me of the recall because I purchased romaine grown in that region. The Canadian recall went out at about 8am. We bought the lettuce at around noon. By the time they sent the email, we were sitting down to dinner with my parents. The Caesar salad was delicious.

I’m annoyed with our grocery store for not pulling it off the shelves earlier. Hopefully none of us get sick. My dad had E. coli a bunch of years ago - one of the strains that antibiotics makes worse - and he ended up in a coma and they weren’t sure he’d make it. He has had to be really careful about what he eats since then so I’m guessing even one of the regular strains of E. coli is not a good thing for him.

Steve MillerI’m thinking Romaine may not be worth the risk ever.
Iceberg maybe, or butter lettuce may be the safer choice.

Is there a reason Romaine is usually the culprit? Is it just that there’s more of it, so more likely to have an issue?
Or do they just grow it in poop?

Steve MillerI don't know why it's so often Romaine and I don't think they always know how it becomes contaminated.
One thing I read says feral pigs come in to the fields to feed at night and it gets contaminated that way.

NinaYuma romaine!! A childhood memory. I was friends with the kid across the street, whose family owned one of the largest romaine/cantaloupe establishments in Yuma.
Yes, I used to live in Yuma when I was a kid.

AdagioMOur housesitters left a head of romaine in our fridge, and I don’t know the provenance. Should I just dump it? They came over from Berlin, so I don’t know if they were clued in to the ban...
