With people spread across the country, it might be good to locate nearer a major airport...

Friends of ours retired to a beautiful ranch in Sheridan, WY. They loved everything about it until the husband developed heart issues and they had to drive 300 miles every week or two to the nearest big hospital for checkups.

I'd add "big hospital" to the list of things to look for.

+1 to what Steve said. We know a bunch of people who ended up moving from their "perfect" retirement home for exactly that reason.

That's been a longstanding problem with my current location.

Especially as one ages, those 2 - 3+ hour drives to a quality medical facility become increasingly stressful - or even necessitating hiring a driver.

Going to and from such facilities (also cabs and hotels) when I had cancer and for the major spinal op, was far and away my greatest expense and hardship.

If I had been less fortunate with the cancer outcome, (requiring chemo and/or other treatment), it would have meant accepting far inferior treatment and judgment calls. The difference between life and death. And if I ever need to take a life-flight in an emergency - the prospective cost makes me shudder. I won't be in a position to comparison shop in case of an accident or to distinguish between a hemorrhagic or clotting stroke!

The second key drawback here, is the out of the way airport. All distance travel means an added flight to a hub airport and combo tickets are astronomically more expensive and time-consuming. My son in the Bay Area needs to pay multiples to visit me than to visit an old girlfriend in London. Means I'm losing touch with my sons.

I MUST get somewhere affordable and safe (thinking of tolerable weather) where these two criteria are met - good medical care and a hub airport..

Perhaps only people in my situation pricked up their ears at this news item, but during COVID the mortality rate for people living far from quality care, was multiples of what it was for those able to access it. This means that when moving, those nice houses in beautiful rural areas, come with this built-in risk factor.

Penn State affiliates who teach, study or whose livelihood requires them to live in the. central location of the university are greatly penalized by a long ago decision about PSU's medical school.

The Hershey family paid Penn State a fortune to locate its medical school in Hershey, PA. It's a three hour drive each way from here.

All these posts are making me think we should just suck it up and stick with our original plan. Missoula is green and has a long growing season, has 5 rivers running through it, has world class health care, has a lively arts scene, has a terrific horse community, has a very good airport with nonstop service to several major cities, is progressive, has a university, has terrific senior services. I just can't find the house I want at a price I can afford. Because everyone else has figured out that it ticks all the boxes, too.

Maybe the wildfires will clear out the riffraff and cool off the housing market. One can hope.

Many good locations for you. The one piece of advice I would give you is move far enough out that the open land around you is not likely to be developed during the time you are there.

Another option we are thinking about is Whidbey Island. I like the arts community there, the climate is lovely. One hour to Seattle for airport and medical care.

Name a few specific locations? I don't want to have to drive for hours to get to the doctor, and airport, or go to a concert. Train service would be ok.
