So sad

Mary AnnaSo sad
We lost a student. It just happened a few hours ago, so no other information has been released.
It's just so unnecessary and so sad.

I hate it when we get those announcements, generally it's someone 20, maybe 22 years old....

Was it someone you taught directly?

Mary AnnaYes, as a parent, this gives me the shivers.
SK, I don't have any reason to think that it's one of my students.
The press release was very brief, only saying that a student had died and mourning the tragic loss. It requested that the family's privacy be respected and said that counseling was available. Legally, that's probably all that could be said, I'm guessing.
It took me two reads to realize that it never said COVID, so I had not realized that when I posted. However, I've been here five years and there are 30,000 students. Surely someone has died before, but I don't remember seeing this kind of press release.
I'm told that the town COVID dashboard lists a death in the male 18-25 bracket in the right time frame.

ShiroKuroMA, I’m not sharing this to diminish this loss, but just to highlight the difference: we have been getting announcements about student deaths ever since I first came here. The cause of death is never listed, sometimes if someone was in the news or if it’s written in an obituary, people on campus learn the cause but often no one knows. We also get announcements when any current or retired faculty or staff die.
If your school hasn’t been routinely doing that, it seems likely it’s Covid-related.
Either way it’s horrible, I hate it when someone so young dies. And yes, if it’s Covid, that’s even worse because it seems like things could have been different.
I have a student who has Covid and is actively sick (I have two other students who tested positive but are aysmptomatic)
I’m really worried about him, this is the second class I’ve had him in and he’s a great kid.

Mary AnnaSocial media says it was COVID.
A FB post purportedly from his girlfriend with her name redacted and just his first name mentioned is circulating. There is a photo of them together and he appears to have been in glowing good health. (This is not to say that he didn't have an invisible underlying condition like diabetes.) He was hospitalized on Monday and died on Sunday. It's just unfathomable.
The university press release says that more details will be provided when they're available, but there have been no updates since last night.

That is so, so horrible. I can only imagine the pain his parents, girlfriend and friends are feeling.
Also, appearances of health, with this outcome, just underscore how important it is for everyone to take this illness seriously.
I feel like the entire country has never gotten past initial reports that covid "only kills the elderly" and as a result, people continue to underestimate the disease.
This is not to criticize the young man who died. He is most surely a victim, of the disease as well as the national discourse surrounding it.

LLSo sorry, Mary Anna...
Our kids just went back to school a week ago.
Dancing around for who got sick, someone is reported having Covid. We don't know if it is a teacher, staff, or a kid. Elementary school, and they haven't shut it down ... yet.
6 current local cases.
ANd the opened school, stores and restaurants.
I stay home or at estates.
