Not sure how the Inc. magazine’s profit motive is aligned, but it just came out with a series of articles that is pro-Apple and critical of Facebook.

My personal philosophy on a internet related privacy issues align better with Apple than with Facebook. Still, it seems the Inc. magazine is rather unambiguously taking side. Makes me wonder if that’s really how their writers and editorial staff feel or if there is some other profit motive that I’m not seeing yet.

Those articles were interesting--thanks for posting.

As for data privacy and its corollary, censorship, it's always a bit of a mixed bag. Facebook was within legal rights to kick people off of their portal for posting lies, fomenting violence, etc. Same with Twitter, etc. But was it "right"? I tend to say yes, but I'm also aware that I'm leaving myself open to accusations of big brotherism (or whatever it would be called). I think some censorship is not a bad idea. I'm also aware of the slippery slope. In my defense, when far-left groups start posting lies and encouraging people to shoot McConnell, or police, I also think that should be shut down.

I am on Apple's side regarding data privacy, but I've had some issues with their stance on refusing access for any reason. There were a few notorious cases where Apple refused to cooperate with law enforcement and provide chat transcripts or (if I remember correctly) the backdoor code to unlock a confiscated phone. Again slippery slope and all that, but in some cases I should think there is a larger good involved that should override privacy on a case-by-case basis.

It's not an easy problem with an easy solution.

But Facebook's sneaky data policies are pretty awful.

Thought this was a pretty even-handed and comprehensive discussion:
