Big but old news

jon-nycBig but old news
Rachel and I divorced a year ago, culminating a process that started before Covid. We get along fine and the boy seems well adjusted to the situation, he alternates weeks between us, and we live half a mile apart.
I’ve been meaning to post this for a while, but it always seemed like a weird thing to just come out with.

RealPlayerWho got the piano?

But seriously, I had no idea. I’m glad it was amicable and works out for your son.

Piano*DadOld news to you.
My first thought was "I'm really sorry to hear about this," and then, of course, I realized that separating is often the optimal course for all parties. So, my "sorry about this" is the general and abstract, "I'm sorry things worked out this way, or needed to work out this way, or, oh heck, talking about it is so complicated ..."
You two experienced a lot together, shared a lot.

rontunerWell, that was a bit of a shock! I'm glad you've managed to navigate the process that often derails even best of intentions...

I'm glad you had your priorities straight!
Jokes (non-jokes) aside, it sounds like it went as well as it could, and all that matters at this point is that you get along and boy-nyc is doing ok.

big alI had wondered why Rachel was no longer present in any of your posts and had supposed that you two had separated.
It gives me no satisfaction to have that speculation confirmed. I wish both of you the best in your future relationship, particularly as regards boy-nyc.
I have some idea of the issues involved because I am once-divorced and have one son from that marriage.

AdagioMSounds like it worked out well for all of you. Does boy-nyc have a complete setup at both houses, or does he have to remember to bring things back and forth? (Nintendo Switch or other such devices?)

DougHope everyone’s happy.
I would give you a hard time for not telling us earlier, but my wife and I didn’t tell anyone, even our parents, for the first year after we were divorced and were still living in the same house. There was a lot going on with our kids that year, and we just thought “one thing at a time.”
Having the houses that close together sounds like a great set up!

He has gaming machines in both places. His laptop and headphones go back and forth but Rachel and I handle the transport while he’s at school. So he just goes to school Friday mornings from one house and goes home to the other.
We also do one mid-week dinner at the other house so neither of us have to go a week without seeing him.

Mary AnnaI'm sorry to hear this in the way that P*D described--sorry you've been through something that's hard in many ways, but glad that you've all adjusted and are happy.
I'm glad you were able to find a place so nearby! That has to be a huge help.

DanLife is gonna go where it wants without much regard to anyone. Sounds like it went to different places with you and Rachel. Glad to hear things are amicable between you as that is what boy-nyc needs most right now.
Living close like you do and joint custody is also good. My ex and I were able to do something similar way back when and my son Brian definitely benefited from that IMO.

This is thoughtful planning.

Well the towns pretty small. I found an apartment for now. I’m waiting for interest rates to have their inevitable effect on housing prices then I’ll buy something.

dolmansaxlilI’m sorry to hear this. Whether or not it’s in everyone’s best interests it’s still hard. I’m glad everyone is settling in with the new arrangement.
