I borrowed a lot of ideas from some guy who wrote them down in the 1960s, but I gave credit! Big Grin

I had to read it twice, since for me "novel research" means reading up on background materials before I write a novel.

Scholarly research somebody else did in the 1980s is fair game!

In my case, it was some woman in 1917!

My advisor and I met her in the late 1980s at her amazingly wonderful house in either the Hollywood hills or Beverly Hills--I can't remember exactly. She was absolutely charming and totally fascinating. She knew *everyone*. There was a time, due to the movie studios, when LA was the place for artists (primarily writers), photographers, etc., and her job at UCLA (not sure it was called that then) meant she met most of them. "LA was a small town back then."

It was a once in a lifetime experience. And, I stayed in the general research area Wink .
