I think I told you that one of my grandsons is autistic. He’s plenty smart (possibly savant level - he can identify hundreds of different marine animals including 10 different types of shark) but he doesn’t speak. He does use some ASL. Part of the reason they moved from PHX to Boston was to get him in to a program at Mass. Gen (I think) that is well regarded. They’ve identified him as a “gestalt learner” - one who learns long phrases rather than individual words. I’ve never heard of that before but it seems they’re on to something. He’s never been so happy and is making real progress. Ever heard of it?

I have never heard the term, but I have worked with a number of Autistic kiddos and each had their own strengths, often completely different from any other child I had taught. Does he use an augmentative communication device?
