Yuck. That's what Mt. Fuji is like too, expect maybe worse because it's not as hard to climb etc. I had thought about climbing Mt. Fuji while we lived in Japan, but when I learned that it's just as crowded as any other tourist site, I thought, no thank you. The thing I love most about hiking (not that I do it much, but even just walking a wooded trail etc) is the quiet, the ability to hear the sounds of the wood and enjoy the view and so on. All of which would be lost if you were surrounded by a throng of people. The other thing that I imagine would be unpleasant would be the inability to go at your own pace. You might want to go faster or slower and not be able to because of all the people around you.
