Tomatoes are a good idea.

I'm happy to have a couple of orchards in my area that have a larger variety of apples than what are usually available in the supermarkets. Empires are my usual go-to for an eating apple, while my wife always watches for the Nova Spy apples for cooking during the short time they are available. We still have a few stashed away in the refrigerator for more baked treats.

When I was a boy on the farm, there was a Rome Beauty tree between the house and the barn that I almost always picked an apple off as I passed by when they were in season. We also had a yellow apple that came up as a volunteer that was an excellent cooking apple. My father tried to propagate it via cuttings, but without success.
