I think Mr. SK would love to be able to do okonomiyaki or Japanese grilled beef that you do at the table rather than on the stove, so I'm thinking that would be a nice Christmas present. But what are the criteria I should be looking at? And what would be a reasonable price? Does anyone have one that they would recommend? There's this Black+Decker for $30 (Black+Decker?? Since when did they make cooking products?) And then there's this Zojirushi for $120. Zojirushi is the company that makes our rice cooker, and what we would buy if we were in Japan Oh, another consideration: the Black+Decker has a three-prong plug, but the Zojirushi one has a two-prong plug. There are no three-prong outlets in our dining room (where we would want to use it). Would it be unsafe to use a three-to-two prong adapter on an item like this?

I'm leaning toward the Zojirushi....

Our Black and Decker appliances work OK but they always seem a little off. Our hand mixer, for example, works OK but has an odd smell and makes the strangest sound. I'd go with the Zojirushi unless you want to start with something inexpensive to see if he likes it.

My main experience with Black & Decker appliances is with a coffee maker that has been a solid performer for a number of years. My other Black & Decker experience has been with other power tools and appliances. My main question is exactly what the grill is intended to do? I think of grilling as cooking over an open fire, which few electrical appliances do. If the function is cooking on a hot surface rather than directly over fire, then either of the appliances you've identified may work. I think the biggest question is how much working area you need for preparing the food in question. We have a Sunbeam electric fry pan that we've used for longer than I can remember. As our family has shrunk, we use it for cooking such as pancakes for which we used to use a griddle. I think the fundamental question is whether you need a grill or a griddle and then what size is sufficient for the amount to be cooked at once. Big Al

Unfortunately I can’t answer those questions because I don’t cook the things he’ll cook on it! But, as it happens, the Zojirushi was just delivered to my office yesterday! I think I’ll give it to him early though in case he wants to return it. Stay tuned for a report!

I've had Black & Decker appliances. In fact, I think my current griddle and electric frying pan are Black & Decker. I haven't had Steve's experience with funny smells and sound, but it's obvious you're not using a high-end appliance. They're just get-the-job-done utensils, and sometimes that's all you need for something that you don't use every day. I've replaced both the griddle and frying pan once or twice each over the years, always because the nonstick surface had given up the ghost. My guess is that the Zojirushi will be more durable. Tell us what he cooks on it!

Cook's Country had a segment on electric griddles. https://www.cookscountry.com/e...32-electric-griddles

Hmm, I can't see the whole page. But, this reminds me that I never posted an update. Mr. SK loves the Zojirushi electric griddle!! We've, well ok, he's already used it a few times, and next weekend we're having friends over so he can make okonomiyaki for them on the griddle.

I'm not a member...but the two top griddles were named in the part you could see?
You can sign up with a throwaway email for a 14 day trial if you want to see the complete ratings...or at least you used to be able to...

I couldn't see any product names, maybe my screen size or browser settings are to blame?? Anyway, on the topic of cooking surface, the Zojirushi is 19" x 12.5" and so far Mr. SK has been abnle to make two okonomiyaki pancakes (for lack of a better label) at once. We'll see how it is when he's cooking for 7 of us all at once!

Just doing a little technical research... In my previous post, I cut and pasted what I could read without a subscription, and then bolded the part with the names of their top rated choices. If you click on my original Cook's Country link, can you see any of what I quoted? Original link: https://www.cookscountry.com/e...32-electric-griddles I'm asking because I'm curious if it is a search engine or browser thing. I use DuckDuckGo and Firefox.

I also use DuckDickGo and Firefox but I can only see the first few lines of the article.

Guess my moderator powers extend beyond WTF. I couldn't get to the ratings at the very end, but I was able to read the rest of the article. I have a bunch of add-ons like Disconnect, Privacy Badger, and Adblock Plus. Not running them to do so, but I wonder if one of them is why I can sneak by paywalls without much effort.

I’m on my iPhone right now (so browser is Safari, it it was the same on my laptop earlier). Anyway, I can’t read past the phrase “leathery pancakes.”

If you really want to do larger gatherings you need something like a 36" Blackstone griddle, but you won't be able to cook on the table.
