Lots of colleges are thinking about it.

If classes are offered online, the fall term will not be “postponed,” it will take place online. I wish the headlines and discussion made that distinction more clear.

Separate from that, this:

It also remains unclear whether colleges and universities can charge students the same tuition if they take classes remotely instead of in-person, higher education experts said.

While students grumbled about paying the same tuition for online classes this spring, there may be a full-on revolt if colleges have not developed robust offerings or addressed the problem, Goebel said.

Indeed. This, plus the number of students who won’t come back in for an online fall because of financial inability, plus the number of students who won’t come back because they will prefer a semester off to a semester online, means AY 2020-2021 is going to be very, very dicey.

I agree with SK that the headline is misleading. Teaching the fall term online is not at all the same thing as postponing it.

(I know that Jodi knows that. It's the author of the article that's muddying the waters.)

Our president spoke to the Faculty Senate yesterday. He was remarkably transparent, given that media people were there. He said that three scenarios were on the table: Reopening campus in the fall, staying online for the fall semester, and staying online for the entire 2020-2021 academic year. He also acknowledged that furloughs were on the table.

He said, and I think that this is true, that there is currently not enough information to know which plan is most likely, so they are planning for all of them.
