I hit both the Japanese market and the International market this week. So many foods I’ve never considered eating. Octopus. Fish I’ve never heard of. Various animal heads and parts I’ve never considered eating (feet). Weird fruits and veg - durian, dragon fruit, odd squash. So how much reaching do you do? Are there any non-American traditional foods you’re glad you’ve tried?

I had a biryani this week. Awesome. Door Dash is awesome.

Chicago has always been an ethnic melting pot, so access to non-American foods here is great, both in terms of grocery stores and restaurants. I grew up in an Italian neighborhood. Some very good friends are from Bangladesh and India. Lots of folks from Vietnam, Korea, China, the Philippines, and Japan. I'll try pretty much anything, including offal (I love liver and kidneys, neutral on sweetbreads), but have drawn the line at brains. Because we don't understand prions, ya know? I really love Indian, Pakistani, and Nepalese food. Mik, if you're up for making biryani yourself, there's a recipe for Instant Pot Lamb Biryani in the WTF cookbook thread.

My dinner last December down in Bonaire: Octopus! Yum. I'm not much for weird body parts (gelatinous webbed feet, shark fin) but I'm up for interesting fruits and veggies. Had toasted grasshoppers in NM a few months ago. Meh.

I've never been able to eat insects intentionally. Rachel tried the grasshoppers in Mexico. I'm with PD. Not a fan of the weird body parts. Had to do that a couple times in Asia in business situations. I don't miss those moments. Any fruit or veggie is fair game, except those horrid ones in singapore. I was at a Jain wedding in India and had an entire plate full of food I didn't recognize. But it was Jain, so I new it was all veg.

Well, there was that fish-parts soup. I never would have tried that if my host had told me what it was at the outset. I am very grateful to my college roommate (who was as white as they come) for introducing me to Ethiopian food. Quirt told me that the first Ethiopian restaurant I went to, Red Sea in Adams Morgan, closed years ago. Last week, I was in Denver, looking for dinner. I was driving down Colfax looking for a hip salad place the interwebz recommended. I came upon a place called Axum. It was kinda shabby looking and it was a good five minutes before anyone working there hove into view. But the food was awesome. But I never would have tried Ethiopian food on my own. Yeah, insects. I don't think I could even (knowingly) eat something made of insect flour. Blurgh. I don't eat menudo, tripa, or brains. I ate a lot of beef tongue when I was a kid and I really didn't like it. I grew up eating really good Indian food. And squid. Unfortunately, I can't eat cephalopods anymore, and crustaceans only in small quantities.

The only foods I won't eat *are* American. Rice pudding is gross--like mucus. Meatloaf--hate it. Don't care for venison either. Love just about any other cuisine I've tried. When I lived in Hells Kitchen I was surrounded by hole in the wall restaurants serving cuisine from every country imaginable. Did my best to try them all.

Love rice pudding. And meatloaf. Two of my absolute favorites, in fact. Haven't tried insects and have no interest to.

There's not really much in Japanese cuisine that I don't eat. I'm not fond of natto (fermented soy beans) because it smells nasty, but I can eat if there's a raw egg cracked over it. Except I try not to eat raw eggs anymore. But that's about it. I've always loved octopus and I pretty much love any seafood I've ever tried. Also, although these days I don't eat a lot of raw fish b/c of food safety concerns, I LOVE such and sashimi... There are things in Chinese cuisine that I'm not interested in trying, I'm thinking about things I've seen on menus that are odd body parts of pigs or chickens. I have tried grasshopper, but I'd rather not do that again, and I'd rather not eat any other kinds of bugs. I would also not eat horse meat or dog meat, although some countries do have that as part of their cuisine.

An entire cow is like 40% edible protein. An insect is like 80% edible protein. If we were to look strictly in terms of nutritional efficiency, we'd all be eating as many bugs as we could. I love rice pudding. I love meatloaf, except for the stuff they serve at the cafeteria at work. They make it with ground turkey. It's grey and vile.

Also count me out for rocky mountain oysters, chicken or duck feet, durian, and artichokes, I will also pass up deep fried snickers, twinkies, butter, and beer.

Hey, what's the matter with artichokes??? Sorry, I'm feeling ... prickly.

I just never liked the taste. I'm not big on jalapenos, either. I like other peppers, though. And I don't like rhubarb.

At the International market I saw a guy buying a dragon fruit. I asked him how it tasted. He told me it tasted awful; bitter and full of seeds. So I asked him why he eats it. He told me that he really didn't know and maybe he's just gotten used to it.

No organs, no brains. No soft shell crab. That's about the only thing I will turn down without question.
