What would be a good or maximum incline for a ramp for someone using a walker or maybe a wheelchair? It needs to cover an elevation of 14 inches and I have at most 10 or 11 feet to do it in a straight shot.

Would 1 3/4 inches of rise per foot of distance be okay? That would be 8 feet. At 10 feet, that’s less than 1 1/2 inches per foot.

Any thoughts?

We have a metal ramp from this company that we use in the garage so we don’t have to lift the generator, snowblower, or wheeelbarrow that are stored on a four inch high apron in our garage.

They have a bunch of products, and an incline calculator to help people determine the product that they need. You can just use the calculator…

ETA: this is the ramp we have:

We went through this a couple of years ago with my FIL. He paid $3000 to have a ramp installed in the back yard - but involved a turn that didn't work for his scooter - so, it was modified to that it could lead down to the sidewalk behind the house. It was then discovered that his scooter did not have sufficient power to go up the incline.

So, the whole ramp was torn out and a concrete base was installed so that we could get an elevator. The family chipped in and in a few weeks the elevator was installed. It was used once, and he passed away.

Smart people would use something like the ramp calculator or if someone had bothered to read the manual for the scooter, it said right in there what the maximum angle for the particular device.

ADA requirements

My BIL ordered and installed a ramp my mother.
It was only used once and that was by the undertaker.

These are the specs you want.

Thanks, all. The specs focus on wheelchairs and give a maximum incline of one inch of rise per foot for unassisted and two inches of rise per foot for assisted. I’m going to guess that 2:12 would be okay for a walker.

I think 1.5:12 will be fine for the purpose and it won’t need a switchback or landings.

Thanks again.

I'm going to get around this by buying a luxury condominium in NYC assuming my first choice of moving to Switzerland doesn't work out. suave
