My wife found a recipe for a fennel & citrus salad that was unexpectedly delicious. It consisted of a fennel bulb sliced thinly, a little red onion, also sliced, naval orange segments sliced into bite-sized pieces, and calamata olives, all dressed with a little olive oil and juice of a lemon. I'm not sure how someone imagines a combination like that, but it was excellent and refreshing.

Lite soy sauce and Dijon mustard with seeds makes a fast, easy marinade for chicken and roasting potatoes or other root veggies.

Maybe I was the last to know about this?

soy sauce and mustard or fennel & citrus aren't so unexpected, at least not to me... but the coca cola thing certainly is!

When I was a kid my great grandma used to make me peanut butter and lettuce sandwiches. I LOVED them.

Also the Coca Cola meat thing wasn’t unexpected for me. I have heard too many “recipes” for slow cookers involving Dr. Pepper to be shocked. I haven’t tried one because…ew.

I eat tomato on toast for breakfast nearly every day. I usually put hummus on the toast but I’ve tried many other sauces. Peanut butter is actually very good (if you don’t get one of the sweetend ones) and Ranch Dressing is good too.

So are leftover chip dips. Yummy

Hummus is a surprisingly nice spread for a toasted bagel.

More toast recipes. The one with the ricotta, peaches, and pistachios got my attention.

I sometimes make my father's snack of saltines spread with peanut butter, topped with marshmallows, and toasted under the broiler. I've seen them called "Marguerites" or "Poor Man's Treats" online, but Daddy called then "Snacky-wacks."

A lot of people do this, but I do like a sprinkle of salt on my watermelon and cantaloupe.

Caponata--chopped tomatoes, eggplant, onions, peppers, and raisins cooked in olive oil and spread on toasted rounds of Italian bread--is to die for.

I also like stews from various Mediterranean countries that are made of meat and dried fruit cooked with a blend of spices,

I think the common thread for me, in terms of weird food, is sweet and savory flavors mixed together. Come to think of it, Daddy used to save a piece of meat to eat with his dessert. Once, we hosted a traveling preacher for Sunday dinner and he did that, too. It was like they'd each met a long-lost brother.

I love the dad stories, MA.

After I read your stories, I remembered that my dad introduced me to two unusual food combos. Fresh radishes from the garden with a little butter and salt. And fresh pickles from the garden drizzled with a little honey.

Dads are the best. Yes

MA, my Dad got me to eat tomatoes by sprinkling them with salt! Watermelon with salt is also delish. Thanks, Dads!
