He might try but he won't succeed.

I can't read the article because of the paywall but there's a lot more to this story than meets the eye.

It's mandated by the constitution.

Does that even matter to him?

The GOP is only "strict constructionist" when it suits them, and they get to "interpret" things

When it's plainly written in the text, it can be ignored ... Big Grin

he won't kill it off, but the cost should be borne by the users. They are right that rates need to be raised.

Progandistic nonsense.

Of course the cost is born by the users.

USPS make a small profit the last time I checked and was only in "crisis" due to a Republican mandate concerning pre-funding of future pension obligations.

Kill off the USPS? Yes, I have noticed versions of this story in the MSM since at least 2008.

Not happening.

Drop the idiot GOP pension requirement and the problem solves itself.

The cost to deliver things in rural areas is many times higher than the cost to deliver things in urban centers. You want the USPS to start charging the rural areas higher postal rates?

Rural areas are hard to get to and have very small, very sparse markets. That’s why private courier services don’t go there. That’s why telecommunications companies don’t build there without legal mandate and/or public subsidies.

There aren’t many “users” of USPS services in the rural areas. “Cost borne by the users” ain’t going to work for the rural areas unless they are subsidized by people outside of those rural areas.

The cost of shipping via Fed Ex or UPS to rural areas is unreal. And by rural, I mean even to a small city.

I recently had to send a manila business envelope with six pages in it, from Chicago to Sturgeon Bay, WI. The envelope and contents weighed 4 ounces.

Because Sturgeon Bay is so close (220 miles or so), I could go UPS Ground and it would get there the next day. Cost was about $28.

USPS 2-day priority was about $8, and if I went first class, it would have been $1.60.
