I find it hard to visualize and I live here! it's just so hard to understand how the piano will change the feel of the room!
Maybe... I'll keep that in mind depending on where other things are in the room. Stand by for two photos.... :P

These pics were from right after we moved in. (Eventually those two mats will be replaced with one big black mat, I think, I haven't decided yet). Anyway this is the front door space.

So if you decide to set the piano on an angle could you place the rug on an angle as well?

Hmm, that sounds interesting but I think that would only work with a smaller rug. This rug is 8x10, and right now the 10 feet side is parallel to the room’s long side. The room is 11x18 and I was thinking I would put the 10 ft side of the rug parallel to the 11ft wall so the rug fills up half of the room, and then the piano sits on that. I’m thinking the rug is big enough it doesn’t need to be lined up with the piano. Hmmm

I can’t remember; do you want the piano on *this* rug, or were you planning for a separate rug? And why do you want to be able to get between piano and the window wall? I just reach from either end of the piano when I want to adjust the shades. The hinge side of the piano is about a foot? a little more? away from the wall, at the closer end of the piano (keyboard is angled so a bit further away).

I am going to keep this rug.
Mr. SK thought that would be wise?? I guess it would depend on what kind of access we'd have to the curtains etc.... I dunno, this is a good question!

Our piano at our last place was next to the window at the front of the house (north facing, front porch) I had is about 6 inches from the wall/window and was able to do everything I needed to with the windows and curtains, and mine is 6’4”

Yes, I know you want to keep this rug. I just wasn’t sure if it was going to be one or two rugs in the room. (We have two, one for the piano, and one to define the seating area.

I do NOT like door #6. I would want the piano to open toward the long end of the room, where the sound could flow into other parts of the house. | |||

AdagioM, my apologies, this rug will go under the piano. And I'm thinking I'll turn the rug and have it on the piano side, and then there will be rugless area with seating... maybe! :P P*D
Ahhh! Thank you for phrasing it that way! Ok, I definitely want to do that, have the sound going toward the tv room and hallway doors.

I like #2 for every day - invites someone to just plop down and play. For piano parties, you could switch to #3 so the players can see their

When I turned my piano on an angle like #2, it felt much more inviting. It was almost a “come hither” look from the bench.

We are close to settling on either 8 or 9, mainly b/c of P*D comment about how the direction of sound, pointing at the two doors (hallway and tv room doors) will be beneficial acoustically. Also, I want to sit so I can see more of the room, either of these does that. Anyway, here are 8 and 9 again. I feel like 9 will look better but 8 is more practical.

I like 9, as Adagio posted, you can see your I don't know about the acoustics in any of the positions. I think other WTFers and the Larry Fine book might be helpful regarding the position to start with.

Saw Is My Room Large Enough? on Piano World. It is from this page. Maybe someone in another department can tell you WTF it says. I can't.
