Read about this before. So hard to fathom.

I love this:

quote:
In later years Rogozov himself rejected all glorification of his deed. When thoughts like these were put to him, he usually answered with a smile and the words: “A job like any other, a life like any other”.

What a Soviet thing to say!

That's a fascinating (if sometimes a bit gruesome) site.

Have read of solo sailors about to sail around the world having their appendix removed before leaving.
But they got a doctor to do the work.

Remember the MD-explorer who learned she had breast cancer while on an expedition to the South Pole?

She self-diagnosed it via a DIY biopsy after palpation pointed to the tumor, after which she treated herself with chemo dropped from a plane per doctors with whom she was in touch.

She survived for ten years after this occurrence and treatment after which she perished from a brain metastasis.

Forgetting too many of the details, I'll search for a link - if so, you'll find it below.

Amazing what medical feats people can perform on themselves when the motivation is strong enough - that, and their training.

PS I see she treated herself with emergency dental care too - and without dental training!
