CHASHave read of solo sailors about to sail around the world having their appendix removed before leaving.
But they got a doctor to do the work.

AmandaRemember the MD-explorer who learned she had breast cancer while on an expedition to the South Pole?
She self-diagnosed it via a DIY biopsy after palpation pointed to the tumor, after which she treated herself with chemo dropped from a plane per doctors with whom she was in touch.
She survived for ten years after this occurrence and treatment after which she perished from a brain metastasis.

Amazing what medical feats people can perform on themselves when the motivation is strong enough - that, and their training.
