When Muffin and I heard Queen's guitarist Brian May speak about his astrophysics research, he spoke about the zodiacal light. I believe it was the topic of the dissertation that he dropped when the band hit it big, and then went back and finished decades later. We have the typical big Oklahoma sky in our neighborhood, as we're sitting on land that was originally prairie and had been agricultural land before our subdivision was built. There aren't many trees and the ones we have aren't large. It feels like it should be a good place for stargazing but the sky is, unfortunately, not very dark. I think it's more than the usual problems with streetlights and nearby cities and humidity. I think there are a lot of fine particulates in the air that blur the night sky. The planets and the brightest stars are easy to see, but that's about it. Nevertheless, I do think I've seen the zodiacal light on the western horizon sometimes in the evenings. Beautiful picture!
