My recommendation would be to take your original Yamaha bench to a good woodworker and have them make some higher legs that fit you better. With a replaceable cushion you'd be set. I would think it would cost less and you'd never have to replace it.

This is the question, right here. I mean, it would cost much less than a true Jansen bench. But if it were move than $250, then I might as well get the CPS bench instead...

Anyway, thanks to your suggestion, I just emailed a local(ish) person who is a Luthier and also does general woodwork, so let's see if he gets back to me.

Here's a Jansen bench that goes to 22" - and they have a used one for $276 including delivery.

I have an older Yamaha piano chair - which is pretty nice - not as padded. This chair looks a lot like it - very inexpensive as I paid a couple of hundred for it about 40 years ago.

Klurrs, thanks for the link. I'm a little suspicious of that Sweetwater bench, the official Jansen's catalogue shows a "petite" bench that looks like that, other sites sell it for $600. Why does Sweetwater have it for half that? (that's not a question directed at you!)

Also, that style is the kind where you can see the mechanism when it's raised and since I'll have it almost all the way up, I'd prefer a style more like the artist benches...

Re those piano chairs, they were the most common piano seating at public schools when I taught in Japan, so I've used them a lot. They're not my favorite.

BTW I found out that the bench that Jon bought is backordered through Feb. 2022! Yikes!

Here’s another site selling the J850 for a price close to Sweetwater. I found a bunch of others, too.

https://www.vandaking.com/jans...o-bench-storage.html

I know you want the mechanism to be more hidden, but just wanted to point out that this bench is selling for less than the $600 figure you quoted. Either the sites you’re looking at are charging more, or they are different benches…

Thanks WTG! Yeah, I don't know what to say about the price, but I think it's a good sign that it's the same model number at both Sweetwater and the site you linked.

Re this site, I've seen it before, they have this bench, which is like what I want (for $299): https://www.vandaking.com/wood...ist-piano-bench.html

But the down side to this site, like JansenPianoBenches dot com, is that I don't know anyone who's ordered from them. Oh, well there was one person at PW so-far who said he ordered a piano chair from JPB, but no one has popped up to say that they've ordered the imported artist bench I'm looking at....

And the comparison point here is CPS Imports (where Jon ordered his bench) -- I probably know 10 people who've purchased a bench from CPS, and none of them have any complaints. (And of course, CPS is backordered till forever)

Maybe I'll email Vanda King and see how their customer service is. (I've had several prompt emails from JPB).

Ah, I found out why that petite bench is not $600 -- it's imported. True Jansen's piano benches, including their petite benches, are made in the US. The piano bench that has that model number, J850, is listed on the official website (pljansen.com) as an imported bench. The $600 petite bench is made in Wisconsin.

That's ok, I'm planning on getting an imported bench myself.

But I would be disappointed if I thought I was getting an official Jansen's bench and purchased this.

People over at PW were pretty critical of the JPB dot com website, saying they were being dishonest in presenting their business as connected to Jansens... But they are an official Jansen dealer, as are many other sites (including Frank B's Piano Supplies site). And obviously, everyone is trying to get business by hanging out the Jansen name.

At least JPB and CPS make it clear which ones are Jansen's and which ones are imported....

Good grief, upgrading my piano bench is turning out to be almost as complicated as upgrading my piano was!
