quote:
Hundreds of the world's endangered languages are spoken in and around New York City.

when i was growing up and later when i lived in nyc, there were yiddish newspapers on every newsstand. all four of my grandparents spoke the language. it seems incredible to me that it is near extinction.

As a matter of curiosity: cool, we have so many languages! Isn’t that neat, isn’t that interesting!?

As a matter of practicality: do we really need all these languages? We know how to create new languages, we can whip up a whole new bunch of them whenever we want. Shrug
