Why, indeed?

My first thought on hearing of this proposal was "What are they going to connect?"

That 5,500 miles of railroad line through some very difficult terrain, needed to connect the tunnel to the existing rail networks of Asia and North America, is probably a much bigger challenge than the tunnel itself.
