The Sri Lankan restaurants around here offer a dish called Lamprais, but fortunately it does not include lampreys. It’s three meats, eggplant, eggs, rice and spices, all wrapped up in a banana leaf. They do a veggie version too.

Lamprey were a huge problem up until some 50 years ago when scientists discovered their spawning grounds and began poisoning them wholesale - a practice that exists to this day.

Now the problem is Zebra mussels.

Next problem up: Asian carp

They're getting closer to the Great Lakes:

We used to have huge dieoffs of alewives, but the coho salmon that were introduced in the 1960s seem to have gotten them under control.

My parents bought some "rukytas ungurys" at a Lithuanian deli back when I was a kid. They were all excited because it wasn't something that was readily available. I tried it and it was actually pretty good. "Rukytas" means "smoked". I had no idea that "ungurys" is the Lithuanian word for eel. If I had I doubt I would have eaten it.

Haven't had it since....it wasn't *that* good....

Not to mention Lanternflies and those longhorn beetles.

The downsides of unfettered trade and travel.
