I am just seeing this news myself, I can't tell how bad it is. I hope it's containable and that most of the building will be salvageable

It looks really really bad.

I was just there last fall. What a horrible loss -- even if it is not completely destroyed. It will be years before it can be open again.

Very, very, very bad.

Beyond the structural damage, looks like they can't get any of the art out.

And, of course, Individual 1, who knows more about fighting fires than anyone alive (just as the folks in California), said they should airdrop water from tankers.

'Cuz I'm sure they have several just sitting around and can swoop down over the Seine to fill them up and aim the dump precisely over a target the size of a medieval cathedral.

What an idiot.

News is a bit more encouraging. Towers seems to have been saved and they're working to save the art.

Read on CNN that they thought of and declined the air drop water approach because they were concerned about the safety to people/buildings nearby and concerned that the weight of a big water drop would damage the cathedral itself.

Take that, Individual 1, you idiot.

The telegraph's coverage seems very complete and current

as does this guy's Twitter feed
(hope the link works)

Good news below, he is saying that all the art and relics have been saved.

Une bonne nouvelle : toutes les œuvres d’art ont été sauvées. Le trésor de la cathédrale est intact, la couronne d’épines, les saints sacrements. #NOTRE_DAME

Thank you, everyone.

This story falls into the category of "news" to me (as opposed to "entertainment/ news", click bait, or something else).

I've reminded myself since I generally stopped following news and politics that you (one) will hear the news on a day like today.

al aqsa mosque in Jerusalem also had a (smaller, fully contained) fire at the same time

Not related, just a weird coincidence.
