Music can evoke powerful emotions that sometimes result in tears.

All of us first generation Lithuanian kids went to Lithuanian school for a few hours on Saturday mornings. We learned grammar, some history, and also music. We all learned the Lithuanian national anthem; the country was part of the USSR, so the official anthem was that one. But we only knew the anthem that had been in place during independence between 1918 and 1940.

We and our parents sang our anthem at school programs, at weddings, and at funerals. It's decades later and I still tear up when I hear it. And I only very rarely cry.

Think of it a sign of resilience and hope!

This started a little over a week ago by our south loop facebook page. Yesterday was the first time a radio station got involved so at least we were time-synced much better! Previously, we voted on a song and then tried to start it at 8pm via whatever streaming device each person had.

I'm kindof on the north edge of the southloop area, most of the highrises with "sky neighbors" are a few blocks south of us. Still, we've had a dozen or so apartments visible from us participating. We have a triangular deck with LED lights (costco!) around that I can flash, so we are more visible than most that are just waving a flashlight.

When I lived in Japan, I (understandably) never heard the US national anthem. Then 911 happened. (I was still living in Japan through 2008). A few months later was at a regional airport heading for a conference in Tokyo. I can't remember what it was, but a TV at the gate was playing some US sporting event, and the Star Spangled Banner came. It must have been years since I'd heard it. I was completely overcome. Ever since then, I very easily tear up at the Star Spangled Banner.

A Chicago friend posted a video where the police were dancing to YMCA. Fun! I can see how getting a radio station involved would work wonders for syncing issues.

We’re too spread out to sing, but the mayor has asked us to go out on our porches at 7 pm nightly and applaud and cheer to thank the health care workers et al.

Some of us are also turning on Christmas lights to add some thanks, hope, and cheer.
