https://www.nytimes.com/2019/1...old-spoon-elite.html High school students from wealthy, well connected families get their names listed as lead authors in major research papers after only very short internships. Students from rich boroughs 20 times more likely to get admitted into the prestigious Seoul National University. The Justice Minister, whose daughter was involved in one of those “fake authorship” scandals, resigned. The current President who campaigned on leveling the playing field for all young people now face intense protests and apologized for failing to do so.

Must be especially infuriating considering how hard most Korean kids work to get ahead, and under more pressure than most any other students in the world. Why else are they repeatedly "scoring" highest in unhappiness compared to all other industrialized nations? And I think the high rate of plastic surgery the S Koreans undergo (highest in the world) is another sad marker of dissatisfaction. http://koreabizwire.com/s-kore...terial-wealth/137900 (It DOES sound a bit like the US, doesn't it?)
