Anyone else have trouble finding a lamp shade? I've had a few lamps with shades that ended up getting broken when the dogs knocked over the lamp. I always had a hard time finding replacements that fit and that didn't cost more than the whole lamp did originally.

I ordered a shade through Home Depot for a little lamp that I bought at Crate and Barrel years ago. I had the shade shipped to the HD store near me. It came well packed (double boxed) and the quality is very nice for the money. This card was included in the box:

I hadn't thought to look up the shade company when I bought their product through Home Depot, but after seeing the card, I did just that. I'm ordering one of their "stock" shades in a slightly different size, and a different shade material than the one I got from HD.

They also allow you to create a totally custom shade, but the prices end up much higher than for the "stock" items (which still let you choose hardware color and shade material).

Anyway, if you're looking for a shade, check them out.

I have always heard that trying to get a custom shade (or just a new shade for an old lamp) is a nightmare, so this is a great resource!

I’ve been known to buy a lamp from a discount place, use the shade and donate the lamp.

It’s usually cheaper than buying a shade.

Store lampshades are my pet peeve. The new ones with the fitting that goes at the base of the bulb are TERRIBLE.

I see that have the old style bulb clip types I have been looking for that will fit my old floor lamps. Yea!!!!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I just ordered two. Woot

I hear you.

I had a floor lamp that had a very large square shade that broke after one of the goldens knocked the lamp over. At the time, I looked into replacing the shade and couldn't find anything even remotely close. I didn't even consider a custom shade.

I ended up donating the lamp.

I think that hardware is called an Uno fitter. That's actually what was on the lamp I am buying a new shade for. I'm going to put a harp on the lamp instead, and ordered a shade that has a spider. I also ordered a new harp, one that can be adjusted for height in one inch increments. Sounded like a cool idea.

I didn't take advantage of it but you can get samples of the materials from Fenchel before ordering the shade. I really like that Fenchel lets you pick the shade material and you aren't stuck making tradeoffs because of the limited selection in a store. Sometimes you want a denser material that directs the light downward, and sometimes you want more general lighting. And of course, you can pick the color you want.

Hope they work out for you!

I once had to replace a glass torchiere shade that our handyman broke when painting the room. I just happened to find a nearly exact replacement at a local thrift shop for $5. I felt like I’d won the lottery!
