Bad idea, IMO. A questionable idea in normal times. In a time of plague? We'll see how it works out if the MSM decide to tell us.

Anybody watching the opening ceremony? It's so strange to not see anyone in the stands. But they do have real people down on the field, clapping and waving, as the athletes enter.

The entire team from Kyrgyzstan was maskless...

We're recording the opening caeremony and will probably watch later.

If you do podcasts, the Japan Times Deep Dive has a two-episode discussion of the Tokyo Olympics (30 minutes each IIRC) that goes through the beginning, when Tokyo was awarding these games, through various problems pre- and during covid, and up to the opening games.

https://www.japantimes.co.jp/p..._category/deep-dive/

The Olympics episodes are 91 (part 1) and 92 (part 2)

I happened to be getting breakfast at one of those breakfast buffets at a Best Western in Boise, ID. As I was loading up, I heard this beautiful jazz piano music and thought, "props to this Best Western in Boise for piping in such great music in their lobby." Then I realized it was the opening ceremonies. Oops.

That said, I thought the ceremonies were just sad. I kept on thinking of all the work that went into creating the ceremonies, and how much was intended to be seen as a spectacle on TV. But empty stands just made it seem pitiful and weird. I'm not sure if it helped or hurt that they chose to go so often to a darkened stadium with highlighted areas on the field. It just made everything seem so isolated.

I read somewhere (maybe here?) that this was the "sensory deprivation Olympics."

It’s the new normal. It will be a very long time before we can pack stadiums.

Tennis has been this way since it resumed in the fall. I’m used to it, and I’m glad to have anything at this point.

Last night, we watched about half of the opening ceremony (recorded). We watching through not quite half of the parade of athletes (nations?? What is it called???)

Anyway, I think if we had stopped after the opening performances, I would have thought as Nina comments here. But watching it as a whole, I didn’t think it was sad. I think they did a great job despite the challenges.

Although I did cry during the Japanese anthem and raising of the flag. We really need to get back for a visit and see Mr. SK’s family. Frowner Hopefully after the Olympics they will ease the quarantine restrictions and it will be easier to travel. (Right now, regular travelers have all these strict quarantine rules that are especially hard if your ultimate destination isn’t the main island).

We will watch the rest of the ceremony tonight.

I'm so sad about Simone Biles--primarily because we all know she is a competitor so the pressure she must've been under had to have been intense.

The comments I'm reading are full of armchair cowboys saying she wasn't "tough enough." Grrrrrr.

What she is doing (what any elite gymnast does) is dangerous. If she is not 100% focussed, she could end up seriously hurt. I don't blame her one bit for stepping away.

Me too, but at the same time, I'm also super proud of her and impressed. I don't think any of us can fully understand how hard it was for her to step back, and I think she's far stronger than any of us realized. To me, her star shines even brighter.
