Exactly the number the usual occupants need for sleeping.

In our case, that’s five. I am accustomed to having one vertically between my head and the wall (outside wall… it’s cold), and we each have two under our heads.

Two.

If it’s a guest room where there’s no where to put pillows while sleeping, then having a bunch of extra pillows is a pain.

Four. Each person requires 2 pillows, 1 firmish foam pillow for under the head and 1 very squishy feather pillow for wherever (Mr. Lisa uses his as extra support under his head, I use mine on top of my head to block out the sound of his snoring extraneous noise LOL.)

at least four, but preferably six. Or even eight. We like pillows!

I have one against the headboard, two additional to prop me up to read, and one under or between my knees. Oh and a curved neck pillow also to support for reading. Mr. Pique needs at least that many! LOL.

I'll go with 4...

Post knee replacement, I started sleeping with a pillow between my legs and that continues years later!

Where do those people that have a multitude of decorative pillows on the bed
put them when they go to bed?

I have four plus a reading pillow that stays in place when we go to bed.

Two for each of us.

They’re old pillows though. Maybe new ones wouldn’t compress as much.

Yep.

That said, I use five pillows and MFR 3 or 4. A wedge, a foam and a feather on top of that, then two normal fill pillows. One for in front of me (keeps my shoulders straight) and one between my knees.

I use two. He uses three. I also have a backrest pillow for reading in bed, but I shift it to the floor when I'm ready to sleep.
