Announcement coming from my school later this afternoon...
11 March 2020, 11:00 AM
ShiroKuroKeep us posted P*D.
We just received an announcement that the person being monitored was found to be negative for COVID, which of course is very good.
I still am hoping that they will announce that we move online after spring break (our spring break starts this Saturday).

NinaIs it coincidence that all (or most) of the closed schools are private (other than UW)?
I could be wrong about that, but it sure seems that way.
EDIT: yep, I'm wrong.

Ohio State.
Rutgers.
Berkeley.
UCSD.
Those are the ones I can think of, off the top of my head.

ShiroKuroAdd University of Wisconsin-Madison to the list.
UW-Madison is another state school with more than 40,000 students. They announced today that they will finish out this week, then spring break, and then after spring break (3/24), classes will resume online at least through April 10th.
Come on, admins at my school, get with the program!!

ShiroKuroOops, add University of Virginia too. I think UVA just announced this minutes ago.
Edited to add: University of Colorado-Boulder will move to all online classes started 3/16. Their posting made it clear that campus will remain open.
We need a list that separates those which are doing the "campus is closed, go home" style, versus those which are just moving instruction online but campus is otherwise open.
There's a lot of debate among my colleagues here about whether campus (and the dorms) should close or not. People keep saying that a college dormitory is basically just a cruise ship with a different demographic...

Just got word from a member of their staff..Our local school will be announcing as well later today.
In a meeting for our big fundraiser, much of the talk is of all the galas and dinners that are canceling in the last 24 hours since our governor declared a state of emergency yesterday.

In a sense yes, but closing dorms puts all those students into transportation situations, expanding the # of people to whom they are exposed.
As long as the uni can feed the kids, it might be safer to keep them on site.

Yeah, that makes a lot of sense... Also, keeping dorms open avoids the problems Harvard is now having, which is how to deal with students who cannot go home, have no where else to go, or who are international students and can't leave the country for a variety of reasons...

Mary AnnaI'm trying to find a map of university closures. It seems to me that public universities in red states have been slower to close, perhaps to avoid antagonizing the legislators who determine their funding.
11 March 2020, 06:04 PM
ShiroKuroMA, I can't help but think that's part of it!
11 March 2020, 06:05 PM
ShiroKuroNot a map, but here's a list (getting longer by the minute)

piquéToday mr Pique was told to start preparations for everyone to work remotely from home (he's the IT guy). And not only do we have no known cases, we are the only state that has no adjacent states with known cases.
But I just read a Montana woman who is in MD and has been there since November has it. Even though she couldn't have caught it in MT, MT is now going to be listed as having one case.
