Mr SK’s studio is mostly done! He took WTG’s suggestion and did carpet tiles for the floor. The white part you can see in front of the outside door is the shoe-removal spot. Now he needs to figure some kind of transition strip or something to do where the carpet tile meets the white tile.

wtgIt. Looks. Fabulous.

and

I was just thinking about the carpet tiles a few days ago, wondering if you had ordered them or not. And if you did, what you thought of them.
Mr SK is natural for these home improvement projects. Those tiles are laid out beautifully! And the non-carpet tiles in the entry area by the door are a brilliant addition.
I gotta tell you, since I stumbled on these tiles when I was looking for examples of carpet tiles for you, I've been seriously thinking of putting them in our basement. They are so fun!
Are you guys happy with your choice?
How many boxes of tile were left over?

BernardWow, SK, that looks fantastic! Nice job. May I make a suggestion that I would do if it were my room? It looks so nicely up-to-date now, I'd trade out those 3 cabinet handles and replace them with something more modern looking, like maybe "bar" handles. Like these, maybe:

.
Yup - it’s called transition strip. The rubber kind is easiest to install and works just fine. You glue it to the floor with contact cement. Latex contact cement is required here (it’s a smog thing and it doesn’t work very well) but I think you can get the old school formulation. Open the windows - it’s powerful stuff.
I checked quickly and it looks like Lowe’s sells it. If nothing else you can get it at a flooring supply store (where you’re likely to find the best quality) or on the net.
Good work!

Steve MillerIs that a piece of sheet vinyl in front of the door? Is there any left over?
If there is, sheet vinyl makes the best shelf liner ever, especially under sinks. I’ve installed it in all of the high traffic cabinets in the house. Absolutely indestructible and easy to clean. It requires a transition strip at the front (I use aluminum) but it’s a super easy hi-lux addition to any kitchen or bath cabinet. I bring home jobsite scraps but remnants are generally available anywhere they sell the stuff.

Thanks! He certainly is a natural! And he has a really good eye, he went through all the boxes, set things out, figured out where the true center of the room is, started from there and work outward. The entry area was tricky because there’s very little clearance under the door, and we were trying to keep the expense down on this project. But he also wanted a visual cue for shoe removal, and these peel and stick tiles are sold by the piece. Done and done.
So re your questions WTG, we are happy with the choice. We have three boxes left over, which maybe we can return, maybe not. Mr SK kind of cherry-picked the colorful tiles, so the remaining three boxes are all pretty gray/dull shades. I noticed a common complaint on Amazon for these tiles was that the boxes weren’t colorful enough. Oh and not all the tiles have adhesive o the back even though they’re supposed to. Mr SK just bought some double sided carpet tape for those, no problem. But be careful, the double sided carpet tape that you buy is probably way too strong, so you would want to use it on nice flooring. Let us know if you end up doing something like this.
Bernard, thanks for that link, those are swanky! I’ll show Mr. SK!
Steve, thanks for the suggestions! I have not seen rubber transition strip, but I’m probably looking in/ googling in the wrong places.

NinaI love the carpet tiles, and am definitely stealing that idea. The colors are so cheerful. It totally makes the room.
