I was recalling composers I'd heard about but never listened to, and this American composer from the 1940s was one. This whole piece is wonderful, but give a listen to the Variations movement that starts at about 3:56. Just beautiful. I think you will like it, even if you just listen to the theme.

Fine performance too.

I'm ordering the sheet music.
