My favorite autumn things
Rutabagas!

Also waiting for the in-shell nuts to arrive in the produce department of my local grocer. Sitting around and cracking open walnuts, pecans, filberts, almonds, and Brazil nuts was a favorite autumn activity for me and my Dad.

I inherited a family heirloom from my grandfather. A memento of a Wisconsin vacation, long ago and far away.

Waiting to be filled to the brim:

Dad's been gone 31 years; for Grandpa it's been 30. Still missing both of them.

Got any favorite autumn things?

Hearty comfort dishes, big redwines, crisp air, walks in the woods, long aimless drives on curvy back roads, apple cider, Halloween (we are already decorated - time for that now so Christmas will be sparklier), football games.

The color of the leaves and the smell of the air. Comfortable days, cool/cold nights. Death of bugs.

By the end of October it’s cool enough to spend time in the desert again. ThumbsUp

I don’t think I have ever eaten a rutabaga. What do you do with them?

They're similar to turnips but I think they're a bit sweeter. They can be treated like potatoes: mashed, roasted, or added to stews.

I like them mashed. Peel and cut into chunks. Steam until soft enough to mash. Season with butter, salt, and pepper. Splash of cream or dollop of sour cream is nice, too.
