Way back on one of the first pages I linked to the world's largest piano, an upright. Here's a new entry - a 12 footer: read about it here: http://www.la-ptg.org/rubenstein/

Wow. Water jet cut, mig welded STEEL plate. Very cutting (no pun) edge, very cool. Extra bass notes. Can't say I care for the finish, but I'd suffer none the less. He actually could have made a mild cocked hat case without changing a thing ('cept some "unused" plate area), or a symetrigrand with little change.

Just to show how big that plate is: Rick, you've got some room to spare, dontcha?

Holy Carp! Look at the action! I wonder how much that baby weighs! | |||

Yes, key flex becomes a real issue with bigger pianos. Look at the longer key buttons and the 'shoe' on the bottom, both of harder wood to provide a more ridgid key during louder playing.

It's been awhile since we've looked at a "birdcage" piano. If you look at the action, you might be able to see how the damper wires come around and up in front of the action, rather than being tucked behind as is more common now. (kindof like peering through the wires of a birdcage.) They are a bear to tune, because it's so hard to mute the strings.

You might recall, in the movie Shine, the piano that David Helfgott has in his room at the boarding house has a birdcage action, and is missing the front panel. I'm looking at that lower picture... the bass strings appear to come straight down, and there's *nothing* in the lower right corner of the case. Non-overstrung???

And just because we haven't see a mirror piano in this thread: Also an Emerson (1920), poor thing...

I rather like this one (1959 Knabe 40" Console):

It looks like someone did the old "refinish around the fallboard logo" trick on this otherwise great looking 1885 Hazelton. Check out the lyre!

Ok, this looks like time for the unofficial WTF caption contest:

Here's a view I like to see that we don't get as often as I'd like, except when pianos are being moved. Underside view of an old 1890ish Chickering 6'4" 109C scale (note the rim thickness and the number of braces):
