Rick, I didn't even think about that - how the H, E, double hockey sticks do you get the silly thing through a door!

I think Faziolis have a "soft" pedal in addition to una corda. It moves the hammers closer to the strings (like an upright) reducing blow-distance and power.

I'd like to say that that picture is priceless...but the price is actually cast into the plate. Wowzers.

Of course, I would not give you $775 for that beast today.

Just give me that fretwork!

Zorba, you and I have a love of old wood cabinets and furniture. Some may be a little over the top for my home, but I surely appreciate that many piano makers also were exquisite furniture makers.

Makes it really hard for me to see a large box of shiny black!

Still thinking though that I could alter the new boxes with old fretting.

Please...if anyone finds old pianos on the sidewalk, take out the top panel for me to work with!!!

I'm planning on refinishing my old Hobart M. Cable eventually and am thinking of adding a bit of gingerbread to it at the same time. It'll never be as pretty as many I've seen, but any relief of its total squareness would be something, even if its just a bit of fluting on the legs or edges.

I don't see all the fascination with black, plain or otherwise. I just love the richness of deep woodgrain. This said, if I were to buy a "painted" piano, it just might be white, like this Sohmer:

To me, this just looks classier than black - but I know I'm in the minority. But I'd much rather have woodgrain!

I don't really see the fascination with "Darth Piano," either. Maybe they're supposed to be intimidating. Give me visible wood any day.

"Darth Piano"...

I *like* it! I'll file that away for future use!

On the other hand, I detest white cars with a passion, and wish my blue Mercedes-Benz was either black or green...
Perhaps we can negotiate a trade. I wish mine was blue...

This picture looks like it belongs in a Rockwell book:
