Middle, 15, is in bed with a 101 temp that hasn't budged even after a shower and ibuprofen.
It came on hard and fast just this morning...So far no real coughing but at this point he is too wiped out to cough...just sleep. Stocked up on Gatorade, ginger ale, hand santizer....Looks like we are going to be homebound for a bit. Is the flu in your area?

Oh yes - At least five confirmed cases in my classroom and two staff members and their spouses. I've been vaccinated, but do not have full immunity yet so I am crossing my fingers.

Younger son didn't get the flu BUT was out for 4 days this week with a 100 fever and non-stop cough. 8th grade and previously never been out for more than a day. Cough started to abate yesterday but not before passing the symptoms to my wife.

I don't know if I had the piggy flu or something else. It was definitely flu. And it came on similarly - all of a sudden I had a fever that I couldn't shake. It was accompanied by a cough. And I ached so much. My skin hurt wherever my clothing touched it.
The good thing was that after only a couple days, the achiness went away and I was just left with the lethargy and the cough. And the cough has cleared up quickly.

The fever broke a bit, now at 100 and he managed to get up and have some soup.
He will have to stay home tomorrow I think so today we have to figure out a way to scan his homework (or type it up) so he can hand it in via email. The term is over on Tues.

The accepted stance right now (according to CDC) is that if you have flu, it's H1N1 as seasonal flu has not appeared yet. Oink, Oink.

I lifted this from a cyclist's forum.
"expect to read about a sudden drop in new cases of flu, starting immediately. Long forgotten is the reason Halloween was timed for the flu season, so I'll remind us. Halloween provides all of us with cheap candy, often leftover candy. Chocolate is a superb antioxidant. Sugar is a superb food preservative. Either one of them will kill ANY virus on contact. Everyone who has endured the flu knows the way past the flu is through a fever. A fever is a measure of the elevation of the body temperature, and that requires burning wads of calories. Candy supplies those calories. Burning one food calorie will raise the temperature of one kilogram (2.2 lbs) of water 1ºC, and the male body is roughly 60% water. Anyone can do the math, and the AMA requires candy packaging to list their calorie content for this reason. Avoid going higher than 105ºF though as brain damage will ensue. So this suggests that the simple home remedy is to save and eat all your Halloween candy at the first sign of a flu. Or you can follow my example and eat the candy for it's prophylaxis value. Or, eat enough and you won't feel well enough to leave the house to catch the flu. It works either way." Worth a try?

Roughly 20% of the sixth grade at our school has a fever or flu-like symptoms. Not good.
By the time the vaccine gets here, there will be no point. |

I'm sorry that he's not feeling well, BeeLady.
Here so far so good. I talked to my doctor about it and he told me that in my age group and not having any underlying health problems I didn't have to worry about it. Who knew. Still, I'm not convinced that we're out of the woods yet. We'll see. |

I know this is the way it seems but does the vaccine work forever? i.e. if you didn't get it you will be protected in the future? Also, I thought I read somewhere that there are 5 million confirmed cases in the US which would presume that many could benefit? |

Well add another to the list...the youngest is now running a temp and has a sore throat.
The three of us are staying home tomorrow and Gatorade and chicken soup are one the menu. So far, I am ok. Fingers crossed.

Bates College--near us--has a pandemic. So far, Puffin's school and friends seem ok. She has her own tube of hand sanitizer. We have a huge jug of it at work and i use it frequently and dose with Echinacea whenever i feel a bit coldy.

Just got off the phone with the school nurse. She said there were a handful of cases last week but that she anticipates this week to be worse after the Halloween festivties.
This morning, Middle's temp has hit 103+. I am in full on hovering mom mode.
