I got a ruling from Piq. It has to be something you chose to get; i.e., you sought it on purpose. With only a couple of exceptions, no one I know of has ever gone traveling with the goal of contracting a communicable disease.

She's thinking more along the lines of this:

One time, a scant 18 years or or so ago, SO and I spent a week in Florida - his first (and only) time there. As we were preparing to leave, we realized that we hadn't picked up any souvenir gifts for any of our friends or family. So, we stopped in at a drug store (maybe a CVS) and found a bunch of stupid "Florida" trinkets, with no thought as to who would receive what.

Upon our return, one incredibly crappy Florida coffee mug was deemed too hideous to give to anyone. It served many years holding pens and pencils on a bookshelf in our home office. I still have the darned thing.

Do kids' souvenirs count? My have picked up some real doozies when they were younger--all unintentionally, which made it even funnier.
