Any durian lover here?

Thai durian seller Anont Rotthong has offered 10 million baht (S$425,000) to anyone who will win his daughter’s heart.

I’ve never seen durian on sale at any grocery store.

Speaking of exotic fruit. A super market store located a few miles from me now carries jack fruit. I’ve never seen one in person and they’re huge in size. Many South east Asians live in the area around this store and they must be the buyers of it. Most Anglos have probably never heard of jack fruit much less tasted it, including me. Same with durian. This store does not sell plaintains which are sold in stores located in Hispanic areas. And it’s probably because there aren’t many Hispanics living in the area around this store.

So it’s like Japanese natto then, except without the moldy gym socks. Got it!

Natto, I don’t believe, can typically spread its stench aroma over vast spaces. Durian typically do, to the point where many hotels ban durian on their premises. Durian is also not permitted on airlines for the same reason.

I guess we don’t have a bona fide durian lover here, and I am not one myself. My observation so far is that there is no “middle ground” with durian — one either loves it or hates it.

Wife suggests “a combination of peaches and gasoline” and you keep burping it up for the next two hours and every time you do you want to die. And everyone around you can smell it when you burp.

If you are ever in Singapore, shun the durian McFlurry.

Seriously.

They are also so moist that they have been known to set off the smoke detectors in aeroplane cargo holds.

Just today I noticed that Trader Joe's sells canned jack fruit.

I wasn't up for an experiment, so I waltzed past it.
