I hadn't heard this. Do you have any citations?

As I said it's controversial but here's a quote from the University of Maryland Medical Center
quote:
Possible Hazards of Sunscreens, Sun Avoidance, or Both. When used generously and appropriately, sunscreen products and sun avoidance help reduce the severity of many aging skin disorders, including squamous cell cancers. There are certain concerns, however. Sunscreens do not appear to protect against melanoma and some basal cell cancers. In fact, some studies have reported a higher association with sunscreen use and these skin malignancies, though not all studies report such negative results.

The reasons for this possible increased risk are unclear, though some theories include:

•Until recently, many sunscreens only or predominantly blocked UVB rays and not UVA, the more deeply penetrating rays now known to be especially dangerous. Studies then may not have reflected the effects of the broad-spectrum sunscreens now available, which block both UVA and UVB.
•People who apply sunscreens may stay out too long during peak sunlight hours. Even if a person doesn't sunburn, UVA rays can still penetrate the skin and do harm.
•People may not put on enough sunscreen.

What I come away with is that it is better to avoid sun exposure (hats, staying in shade, etc.) than relying on sunscreen.

Thanks. As I said, I'd never seen that link between sunscreen and melanoma cited before. I've forwarded it on to a number of people.

However, it sounds like the issue isn't a higher incidence of melanoma as a result of sunscreen use. All of their theories suggest that it's over-reliance on sunscreen, or inadequate sunscreen (either type or kind), that's the problem.

What I come away with is that relying on sunscreen ALONE isn't a good idea. Following the guidelines on how much sunscreen to use, less time in the sun, and other methods of sun exposure prevention should be combined with prudent sunscreen use.

BL - I have had two basal cell carcinomas removed, most recently this last May.

I'm sure everything will be fine!

BeeLady -- good luck; Im sure you'll be fine.

I have a weird growth on my lower lip. It's called a fibroma, and as such is not cancerous, but it's annoying as hell. If they grow in a place where they don't bother you, they don't even remove them, but this one is right in front of my lower teeth and annoys the heck out of me. It's scheduled to be taken off in about a week; very routine and considered a minor procedure.
