Mister Soak has had two bits removed. One Basal Cell and one of whatever the next on the level of severity is.

The basal cell was above his lip. He had it done at a hospital in Boston, and they had a plastic surgeon type do it. So the scar is pretty much hidden by his smile line.

I'll ask him tonight how long the procedure took.

Where are you getting it done, BL?

This is a good reminder for me to schedule a check-up with my dermatologist. I had a basal cell carcinoma removed from my back about 8 years ago. I've worked a number of years in tropical countries and grew up on a farm so I've had a good deal of sun exposure over the years. I initially visited the dermatologist to investigate a growth that turned out to be benign, but an annual check-up later found the carcinoma that was removed.

I'm glad you're taking care of it. Best wishes for a quick and simple procedure.

Big Al

Anyone had this done?

I have had Mohs surgery for a basal cell carcinoma and it came out very well, much better than a non-Mohs removal I had some time ago. The whole idea of Mohs is to remove as little as possible while still getting the whole cancer. This is much better than taking out a really big chunk to make sure you got it all. The downside is waiting while lab work confirms the removal, possibly several times. There's no reason to be particularly afraid of of basal cell carcinomas, they are very slow growing and don't metastize. Also, getting a basal cell carcinoma doesn't seem to make you more (or less) at risk for melanoma, the dangerous kind of skin cancer. Hats and staying in the shade are always good ideas. There is quite a lot of controversy about the use of sunscreens and some researchers feel that sunscreen may increase the occurance of melanoma (the bad one) while decreasing basal cell carcinomas.

Quirt I have heard this too....but don't have it at my finger tips...

I can only think that my very Irish heritage has something to do with this...As a teen I tried, really I did, to get a tan..but gave up early on. My saying in HS was that I wanted to bring pale back into fashion. Yes

But this is a good reminder for my sister..who was a swimmer and a very brown lifeguard for several years and still spends much time on a beach or at the pool.

Did I mention that I LOVE hats!? My gardening hats are sort of known around here (the one with the bug net had me called "The Black Widow" in the neighborhood! ROTFLMAO)....

I got this one when my old favorite died....I wear it all the time and in fact it is currently hanging off the back of my car seat so I can use it where ever I am...just goes to show....you just never know.

Oh, and Dol it is being done locally, Westford...In the last few years our local area medical services have become better and better...I used to go to Boston for everything, but now I find I get just as good, or better, care right here near home.

Soak lived in Boston when he had the first bit removed, so that's why his skin doc is there. And he was so incredibly ill when he was diagnosed with Lupus that they had about 6 different specialists trying to figure it out.

I think he'd prefer to have someone more local so it didn't involve driving into the city every time he has to get bloodwork done.

Dol, he should ask around in Concord/Emerson Hosp. area....Things have changed alot here in the last 10 years or so....The practice that did my rotator cuff surgery is nearly famous...I can't tell you how many people I have run into in the waiting room...and just this week I find my office mate is to have the same procedure with the same doc!

When we first moved here I looked for a female ob/gyn....There were NONE. I had to travel and still use the same practice but it meant that my two youngest kids were born at a hospital nearly 45 minutes away!

Things are much better here now.

(Sorry for the hijack, all!)

I think for the skin cancer stuff it would be okeedokee. But his Lupus doc is one of the best in the world. Considering how severe his flare up was last time and the fact that his case is a bit abnormal, even for the lupus world (no tell-tale butterfly rash and really no symptoms at all until his kidneys and liver had more or less shut down). The lupus doc basically overheard some of the other specialists discussing his case and demanded to see him. I want him to have the guy who we already know gets his situation.

I am sorry that you have this, but it sounds like the procedure is a very effective one. My Ex husband had it done on his eyelid and nose. You can't even tell at all.

Hope your results are just as good.

As I said it's controversial but here's a quote from the University of Maryland Medical Center
quote:
Possible Hazards of Sunscreens, Sun Avoidance, or Both. When used generously and appropriately, sunscreen products and sun avoidance help reduce the severity of many aging skin disorders, including squamous cell cancers. There are certain concerns, however. Sunscreens do not appear to protect against melanoma and some basal cell cancers. In fact, some studies have reported a higher association with sunscreen use and these skin malignancies, though not all studies report such negative results.

The reasons for this possible increased risk are unclear, though some theories include:

•Until recently, many sunscreens only or predominantly blocked UVB rays and not UVA, the more deeply penetrating rays now known to be especially dangerous. Studies then may not have reflected the effects of the broad-spectrum sunscreens now available, which block both UVA and UVB.
•People who apply sunscreens may stay out too long during peak sunlight hours. Even if a person doesn't sunburn, UVA rays can still penetrate the skin and do harm.
•People may not put on enough sunscreen.

What I come away with is that it is better to avoid sun exposure (hats, staying in shade, etc.) than relying on sunscreen.
