It's voluntary, but let's just say highly encouraged.

Yeah but they won't ruin your life, kick you out on the street and throw you in jail if you refuse.

But the government will.

Evil government! EVIL!

Yes, but will the government condemn to hell your immortal soul? To burn in fires everlasting?

Let me see if I got this right...

You are OK with eternal damnation (aka "frying in hell") (and I'm not talking about summer here in Arizona) but you are worried about paying taxes?

WTF

Not worried. I'm disgusted that we have income based taxes.

As if we didn't know that by now...

Poor ol' Mark is disgusted by taxes, in which the gumment takes all his hard-earned money, and wastes it on frivolities like police protection, fire protection, water service, snow removal, sewer service, road maintenance and construction, development, schooling for his kids and all those other evil liberal socialist ideas...

Blah Blah Blah

Hey, those things are good, and if we tie Mark up in a room and gag him, we might get Mark to agree to them, snark, but the government does a lot of objectionable things with tax dollars. Is it fair that the government takes my money, fights wars of aggression, and also just gives it away to foreign countries, as if we don't have our own financial problems?

Income taxes pay for none of those things.

Oh, I'm sorry... I forgot that the good fairy paid for that. Wink

Well, they pay for those things down here... does Wisconsin have no income taxes?
duh
Never mind... I just asked Connie and she says that Wisconsin has a state income tax (she used to live in Hayward, home of the beer shopping bear.)

So you are saying that all of those services are somehow (see "good fairy" above) paid for without using income taxes in Wisconsin?

Neat trick... if it were true.

Which I have a hard time believing...

Most are paid with property taxes here. Yes a small percentage of our state income tax pays for some of those services but not Federal Income Taxes.

I will eventually move to a state with no income tax. The only reason I stick around here is my wife has family here and well, I like to keep her happy.

Do you always have to be so damn condescending?

You will regret making that decision when you retire. As it is, the states and Fed are going to get their money one way or another. States with no income tax generally have much higher property and sales tax rates as a result. You may say you don't care about those, but when you're living off your assets, and the income isn't coming in like it used to, you'll be wishing for lower property and sales tax rates.

Well you could move to Washington state. They have no state income tax. But the cost of living gets you when you don't expect it. Oregon has no sales tax, but "impounds" added at the wholesale level jack prices up than they are on the Washington side even after sales tax is added.
