Wow. She filled out her bar registration as “American Indian.”

How? Why?

I just do not understand how an educated white lady in the 1980s gives that answer.

There's an interesting annual Pinkster Festival in historic New Paltz, NY, where African-Americans dress in the costume of 18th century Dutch settlers. (They don't do whiteface though.) It's primarily an African-American holiday though it comes from a Dutch tradition.
