The commonly accepted story is that colonisers introduced horses to North America. But some people believe there was a surviving native breed of horse when the Spanish arrived.

Have heard of Ojibwe horses. Did not know of
claims they are native.
A documentary on Prime Video, maybe Netflix, recounts the story of a woman who found DNA evidence that there are spotted horses related to the Appaloosa the Nez Perce tribe claim to have had in Idaho before the discovery of the Americas.

And this is my friend’s father talking about his memories of the wild horses on Bkejwanong (Walpole Island).

Those were great, dol. I love the part where your friend's father says they followed the horse trails because they knew they would lead them to apple or fruit trees... ThumbsUp
