does not damage the piano (has rubber inside the clips - you could always line it with felt if you were worried) No cord to mess with.

https://kootek.com/household-light/

Has two brightness settings. Charge lasts a long time. Highly recommend. Amazon has it cheaper than that website. $15.99

And easy to unclip - so take it off your music desk and close up your piano - no problem. I won’t ever use a big lamp again.

So there was a very tiny girl at the piano. Lights would shine right in her face.

I am not tiny and would not want to see the lights. Does it lower more? I remember shining bulbs in my eyes as a student. Ugh.

I use an antique wrought iron lamp. The light has a shade and adjust up and down the pole, and tilts as needed. The base is a triangle so I can bring it close or back further as needed and it doesn't tangle in the piano leg.

And they are much cheaper than listed here at antique stores, house sales etc.

The arm is infinitely adjustable - you can curve it right towards the music, and it will not shine in your eyes.

Oopsie, I do not own that piano lamp. I just found and used it as an example image of what I was talking about. Mine is your basic pole on a single curved pole version. I still love it, though. And it was kind of spendy. I don't remember what I paid for it, but I wouldn't be shocked to find out it was over $100. I got it at the same time as I bought my good piano bench, in a "I don't think this is a passing fad" moment after I bought the new piano.

This is like mine, only mine has bronze, not nickel metal:

I agree, SK, the one in the photo is really pretty.

The clip-on lights that I use are teeny-tiny. I'm rarely in an orchestra pit, so I don't want a big light, just enough to light up the pages. They are kind of like those "itty bitty book light" lights, only there are two (one for each page).

Ah! Too bad! I've looked all over and I haven't found any like that for sale. Ah well!

Do you keep your music desk up (open) with the lamp on it like that? Or do you take it off and close things up?

Yeah, I don't think I can go that route...

I'm leaning toward a floor lamp with a joint so the lamp head (which is like a stick? bar?) comes right over the center of the keyboard.

That is what mine looks like. I like it. It is LED. Think I found it through Piano World.

Well that was fast. First, I ordered this (the lamp, not the piano, har) and it was delivered today:

Mr. SK put it together, and there were immediately two problems. 1) It's not stable enough, and 2) the light-head doesn't swivel, so you can't angle it toward the music stand. So Mr. SK took it apart and packaged it back up, and it's getting returned. Too bad, because I liked the way it looked.
Here's the link.

So I ended up ordering this cheapo and maybe I can save up for something fancy and expensive (and then this lamp could go somewhere else in the house)

Well, the cheapo light I bought (the one in the post above with the square base) will not work.

Not because it's cheapo though, it's actually really nice, and would make a great reading light.

But it doesn't come far enough out to the middle of the keyboard, and if you angled the light-head to improve coverage, it would blind any listeners or duet-friends. (If we ever get to the point where we have guests in our home again...)

Anyway, I'm going to revisit the clip-lights, and also see if I can find something interesting and artistic, but still functional, to go behind my back along the wall...

Why not leave your piano open? You play it every day, and you don’t have cats that want to get on the strings?

Would this style (not necessarily this particular one) work? There are some that have the shade pointing down rather than angled like this one.

Trying to find something adjustable that will also reach over far enough to illuminate the music...

edit: another possibility.
