I am getting directions and ended up checking on MapQuest, Google and Yahoo Maps. The actual recommended routes were the same, but the level of detail was not (for example, the exit names or whether merge right or left etc).
Which site do you check first? Which do you trust the most?

I like Google, because you can edit the route by dragging and dropping. That way you can say, "There's no way I'm taking Hwy. 62 at night!" or "I will need to stop at this 7-Eleven and pick up some Skittles on the way."
When there's a street view available, it's the bomb. |

I use Google Maps, because it's on my phone.
But I have found that Mapquest is more reliable. |

I've tried it. Still prefer paper maps.
My son has a cheap-o GPS unit that gives him all kinds of bizarre directions, like driving through Manhattan to get from central New Jersey to northern New Jersey. When he was driving on his job, he'd regale us at dinner with tales of where the GPS would tell him to go.

I've used Mapquest with success. I find that you don't have to follow their route exactly - especially in your own locale - as you may know a better route - until you get closer to where you don't know where you are going. Does that make sense?

Most of the time, I just use a TomTom GPS navigator device these days.
If I need to do something fancy, then I'll use Google Maps, mostly for "drag & drop" route planning. I do that mostly when I want to take a path that is not the "shortest" or "fastest." Plan it out on Google Maps, identify key points along the path, then program that into the GPS navigator. Also, when trying to go to a chain store that have multiple stores in an area, I'd get the list of store addresses from the store's web site, then throw them all on Google Maps to figure out which one would be most convenient for me to go to. When planning a trip with multiple destinations, I'd also throw them onto Google Maps to plan out the sequence (this one first, then that one, then that one, etc.) -- then program that sequence into the GPS navigator. And, yes, I keep a copy of US road atlas -- paper maps -- in the car.

Google maps is my favorite. Used to use MapQuest but google is so much easier from the perspective that in the search box you type in whatever you know about the addresses and it will try and map it for you. MapQuest at least used to require using their structured boxes--what a pain.
I have a different system in my car-ca't tell you what it is but if I am going somewhere new I'll usually do google maps first and then plug the address in the car. Can't remember any material variance between the two. I keep the audio off on the car system but the "turn left 100 ft" drives me nuts is it the road coming up or the next one. LOL. |

Ah, the joys of GPS - we explored many a back road through New England this summer simply due to our trust in "Carmen the Garmin" (we named it after "Where in the world is Carmen San Diego"). Some days it was Carmen, some days it was "the bitch", depending on where it led us! Oh, and Google maps gets my vote as well.

I use Google maps because I find them more accurate than Mapquest.
I just received an invite with the directions stating "Do not use Mapquest!" as the directions to their home are incorrect!

Have been happy with the results from Yahoo Maps.

I use Mapquest usually, because that's what I started out using. But I like Yahoo maps, too -- they have highway exit numbers and things like that that Mapquest doesn't, and there's only one box for typing in the address. But Mapquest maps can be easier to read.
When I was planning several driving trips we'd need to do on a trip to California about 5 years ago, Mapquest and Yahoo maps would often give different routes for the same trip. Never could figure out why.

I really disliked Yahoo Maps's interface. But I think I liked their map better? I can't remember, but I ended up printing out the directions from one and the map from another. Then, while driving, we used the iPhone GPS as a back-up, which is Google right?
Anyway, I think it must be that there's a lot of variation when it comes to getting around complicated neighborhoods in big cities. We were trying to get from one city to a conference center in another city, so that was pretty standard. I think I would be less trusting if I was trying get around the bowels of Chicago or NY City. (eww, that sounds kinda yucky!)

My son attends college on Long Island NY...the directions from my sister's house in NJ are mind boggling...so many highway changes...But Google maps are right on and I have the printed directions in my glove box for anytime I need to get there.
