Because March 14th is 3.14! (look at the cake in Ax's post).

Back in 2015, some were excited because it was 3.14.15.

π, the ratio of the circumference to the radius of a circle, expressed in decimal form is 3.14, which corresponds to March 14 in certain (popular) way of writing dates, hence the "special day."
