GOP bill on immediate checks:

-- $1,200 per person ($2,400 if filing jointly)
-- $500 per kid
-- Begins to phase out above $75K
-- Phases out completely above $99K
-- Much smaller benefit, of $600, for millions w/o federal tax liability

So say you’re a single mom waitress with EITC so your tax liability is zero, only half the benefit for you!

I've heard mention of GOP desires to push sizable corporate tax cuts. I would oppose that.

Not sure the benefit should phase out at 99K. That's too low. Many people with incomes in the 100s have low savings and decent sized debts (student loans, car loans, mortgages) that won't wait until their paychecks return.

What irks me is the benefit cut at the low end.

What’s the opposite of means testing?

Especially given most cases will be in denser areas where things are more expensive

Probably still get a check because SS is partially taxable.

I assume it will be taxable or deducted from any refund next year, or added to anything owed.

I don't think so mark. It's a straight payment, unlike the Bush era tax credit.

Total joke. Insulting to most people.

Say you are a single parent with one kid in day care. You're laid off. You have rent, food, and day care as major expenses. You cannot give up your slot in day care because you can't work without it, once work resumes. Your monthly rent is $1200, your food is $500, your day care is $2000, your utilities are $300.

You get $1700 from the government?

You might want to use it to buy a tent and some sleeping bags, 'cause you're about to be homeless.

It's a pretty blunt object, with little use other than to help the GOP say they did something. I agree with Cindy, and it's the same old carp they did post 9-11. Remember those $300 checks we were supposed to use to go out and "stimulate the economy"?

I was so annoyed I gave mine to Planned Parenthood.
