Thanks everyone.

I ma just beside myself.

Right now we're just waiting. They put him on the ecmo bc his oxygen levels were low and his infectin/white blood cell count is up, and they're are worried about possible damage to his heart from sepsis. And also they are concerned about "air in the chest area" (as per my mom's message), I don't know exactly what that means.

I just can bare to even think about the what ifs... it's not even day-by-day, more like hour-by-hour right now.

How scared and helpless we feel when faced with that kind of sickness. Hoping for the best outcome possible…

Thank you everyone.

So, he's on the ecmo machine, and I guess stabilized. It's not clear whether or how much damage has occurred to his heart, but that's one big concern.

Tomorrow he will have a surgical procedure to remove air that is built up in his thoracic cavity.

And they've added another type of antibiotic to his meds....

Oh and I asked about cytokine storm... they're not calling it that, but it sounds like from what they are describing, his immune reaction is basically doing what it does in that situation.

There's still no explanation for anything of this, so I'm worried about how much all the treatments they are doing are going to help since they don't really know what the root cause is.

In the meantime, my mother, who's going to be 79 years old next month, is driving all over the place trying to help out my sister in law, trying to shuttle my niece around, feed their dogs.... And ignore her own breaking heart.

I need to figure out if I can go there, if I should go there... I wish it wasn't so far away.

I’m so sorry, SK. It must be so hard to be so far away from them. Hopefully they will figure more out soon and get to the cause.

SK, I just saw this. It is a real nightmare you're describing, for everyone including, of course, you.

I can only pray for his recovery, starting with identifying the cause, and moving to recovery ASAP. I am pretty overwhelmed even just reading of this poor man's suffering.

Where DO such devastating sicknesses come from?
I'm trying to remember where I recently read a strikingly similar case (NYTimes mystery illness column?) to send you in case it helps unravel it.

Meanwhile, I can just hope the best wishes of this fellow human being can make some difference. So sorry for this hellish situation all you poor people are struggling through.

Comfort

I can't find the article I had in mind, but having recently been reading about sepsis it sounds most like that. It appears to be on the increase lately for unknown reasons.

Also strep.

The Cleveland Clinic offers a virtual second opinion program (think it's close to $2K) for patients for whom all tests and case histories are provided to them.
https://www.clinicbyclevelandc...ual-second-opinions/

I've always thought if I or a family member were struck by an apparently undiagnosable condition I would turn to them for their expertise especially since help can be provided at a distance.

Oh, sk, I'm so sorry about this. I wish you were able to go to him. It's so hard to be far away.

I'm glad your mother is able to provide support, even at her age, because it must help her to know that there's something she can do.

Please do keep us posted, and please know that we all care very much.
