When you call a dog, he comes.

When you call a cat, he takes a message and says he'll get back to you.

My cats come when I call them, but mostly because they think I'm going to feed them.

Although new cat Calvin (Calvin LeRoy Purraldi) comes when I call him, because he's got a tiny attention span and always wants to know what's going on.

One of our cats ... Loki, the boy ... will usually come when I call him by name. It's sort of a check in. He comes directly over and seems to ask, "were you looking for me?" I just called him a few minutes ago, he came from another room.

Rogue, the girl cat, doesn't come when called. She is absolutely aware of her name, but she has no interest in responding. She expects the world to adapt to her.

My lamented late cat didn't necessarily come when I spoke his name, but he'd make eye contact and speak back.
