Wondering what the long term effects might be. Saw a little kid on a news broadcast who talked about how he still felt lousy months after being sick with the virus. He's still running a low grade fever nearly every day and it taps him out.

https://www.cnn.com/2020/09/15...ather-son/index.html

Here's an article in Nature about various post-COVID issues:

https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-020-02598-6

For those who have seen the movie Awakenings or read Oliver Sacks' book of the same name....I wonder if we will have our own version of encephalitis lethargica, a condition thought to be an aftereffect of the 1918 flu.

As the Nature article closes with...

the answers will not come quickly. “The problem is,” says Gholamrezanezhad, “to assess long-term consequences, the only thing you need is time.”

For most people, Covid-19 is a brief and mild disease but some are left struggling with symptoms including lasting fatigue, persistent pain and breathlessness for months.

The condition known as "long Covid" is having a debilitating effect on people's lives, and stories of being left exhausted after even a short walk are now common.

So far, the focus has been on saving lives during the pandemic, but there is now a growing recognition that people are facing long-term consequences of a Covid infection.

Yet even basic questions - such as why people get long Covid or whether everyone will fully recover - are riddled with uncertainty.

NBC News identified more than 80 "post-Covid" clinics nationwide that are actively engaging with Covid-19 patients who continue to have symptoms months after their acute infection cleared. The 64 clinics surveyed by NBC News have seen nearly 10,000 patients — likely just a sliver of the true number of people affected by a condition only recently given a name by the National Institutes of Health: "Post-Acute Sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection," or PASC. Millions of others may be seeking care with a personal physician or suffering alone.

My sister in law is a long hauler. She works in a job that requires her to be VERY fit and stay awake for long periods of time in situations where others would likely sleep. We are worried about her recovery.

Approximately 85% of so-called COVID-19 “long-haulers” have experienced four or more neurologic symptoms while contending with the long-term impacts of contracting the coronavirus, according to a new study by Northwestern Medicine.

Northwestern physicians interviewed “long-haulers,” defined as individuals who have had COVID-19 symptoms for six or more weeks, the hospital system said Tuesday in a statement announcing the results of what it said was the first such study.

The neurologic symptoms “impacted their quality of life, and in some patients, their cognitive abilities,” according to Northwestern.

Yes, I'm that immature.... Big Grin

Seriously, though, I'm not surprised. Chronic fatigue syndrome is, in my opinion, a very real phenomenon but something that remains elusive to medical science. At least long haulers who complain about fatigue are being taken seriously, unlike those with CFS. Hopefully they will end up finding a link between fatigue and some wacko autoimmune response and can start thinking about treatments.
