I love reading all these piano stories!!

Nina, that “tubby” sound is really something! In Japan, I used to play these old beat up uprights on schools in island communities, so the salt air and humidity had done a number on them, and some of them were distinctly tubby!

I remember hauling a piano to the dump as part of a remodel project.

That piano was completely hopeless but it still broke my heart.

I've played a lot of "tubby" sounding old uprights (like 100 year old ones) and I think that can be due to old strings and soundboard too.

It's interesting how attached we can become to objects that fuel our passions. Everything from sports cars to carving knives can share that attachment and musical instruments are near the top of the list. Pianos may top the list. It's not uncommon to own several guitars or a couple of horns, but not many of us have more than one piano at one time.
